Your bad businessman loses a million dollars a day and has been for the last 2000 years and will continue to do so until the year 2736. That means he had a trillion dollars to start with (the money has to come from somewhere, right?) Suppose he had his trillion dollars in a bank at 1% interest, which is quite low. In that case, he makes $2,739,726 a day in interest, which more than covers his losses -- and that doesn't even take into consideration compounding!

As always, it takes money to make money, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, etc., etc.
