I talked to a copywrite lawyer many years ago but he said that if you do an original painting of a picture of someone famous and the recognition of that person would sell the painting then you are in risky territory, definately if you do prints to sell of someone famous like Elvis for eg. If you do an original and it's a copy of another painting and you sign it with your name and say it's a copy that is ok. It is ok to paint an original of some public bldg but you need to check the law about somebody big like Elvis or get permission first.
