Born in Manhattan June 1968, Marcus Antonius Jansen first grows up in New York City while staying in the Bronx with his mother, then later moving to Queens NY.
In the late seventies, his parents decide to leave The Big Apple to settle in Germany. Jansen first finds it difficult to adjust to his new environment as he grows up bilingual speaking both German and English, while torn between the two worlds that have yet become a significant part of what his art reflects today.
He spends a great part of his life traveling around the globe. By the young age of 24, Jansen has already traveled to places such as Germany, Netherlands, France, Italy, England, Belgium and most other parts of Europe. Southeast Asia, and Southwest Asia are added to the list of spots that he visits while in the US Military. Jansen’s first art show takes place at the age of six during a NYC school competition at PS 156 in Laurelton Long Island, where he is selected by his art teachers to present an impressively painted image of a lion.
On frequent trips from Germany back to his birthplace New York City, Jansen’s painting skills continue to develop, inspired by a vibrant "Graffiti" art scene taking over the underground of the urban art world of the 1980s while he connects with several local artists in New York on his trips back including notorious graffiti artist ”WEST” now vice president of PNB Nation clothing in NY.
A predominantly European audience in Germany at the time encourages and commissions Jansen to paint on walls and canvases, to design T-shirts for numerous customers and friends, and to finally launch small art exhibits, which gain the attention of local German newspapers, radio and TV stations.
In 1986 Jansen completes a one-year study of composition, color and design at the "Berufsfachschule", followed by a three-year study at a German school for painters. Jansen’s work evolves by the use of different tools such as airbrush and spatula. He artistically designs various company logos and draws more figuratively, yet combining his style with an abstractive touch.
At a crossroad in his life, he joins the United States Army in early 1990 and, right after basic training, is sent to the Gulf War in Operation Desert Storm with the elite airborne troopers of Ft. Bragg N.C.. Shortly after, Jansen spends time at the D.C. Walter Reed Hospital for Gulf War difficulties and is diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is there where Jansen finds his way back to painting, this time using his art as therapy. He is honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant in November 1997.
The same year, Jansen - with the support of his future wife Michaela and best friend Robert Suarez - successfully launches MEPSArt Studio in Aachen, Germany. MEPS stands for Marc's Essential Painting Skills. Again, he draws attention of German radio stations and appears with various articles in European newspapers.
Upon his return to New York City in 1998, Jansen introduces his work to the urban community in the streets of SOHO on the corner of Prince Street and Broadway. While gaining immediate attention, he wins at the New York City ORB.E art competition and new talent search, sponsored by Russel Simmons and is selected semifinalist in the NYC Slow Art Competition as well as chosen to show at the Madison Square Garden International Film and Art Festival only one year later.
In 2001, Jansen and his wife move to Atlanta, Georgia, introducing their own art publishing and distribution to a broader U.S audience. Magazines such as Art Business News, Blacklines Magazine, The Source, as well as Atlanta Goodlife have taken note of the artist since then. Lia Magazine (Life Imitating Art) is featuring the artist in their 2002 September issue with an eight-page feature article out now at your local Barnes and Nobles, introducing his new what he calls "urban-contemporary art" style to the world - a semi abstract style that suggests depth and movement with bold strokes and innovative use of color with a strong focus on bringing the Urban and mainstream communities closer by capturing the rawness and majestical feel of our enviroment we all share daily.
Jansen continues to show and sell his work to US and European collectors and galleries. Recent exhibits include Gallerie Schoenen in Aachen, Germany, Oprah Winfrey’s COLOR Show in Chicago, Indiana Art Center and local Atlanta Galleries such as Musart, Rightbrain Gallery, and Darious Gallery. Upcoming shows will be held at the Stricoff Fine Arts LTD in Chelsea, New York to name a few. Jansen is also commissioned by Ford Motor Company in Detroit to create four paintings in reflection of the company’s history at their 100th birthday celebration in June 2003.
