VENUS ENVY 2003 ANNOUNCES OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS!!!

SEEKING ART SUBMISSIONS FROM WOMEN ARTISTS FOR THE 5TH ANNUAL VENUS ENVY ART EXHIBITION AND CELEBRATORY EVENT IN ST. LOUIS

Venus Envy is an annual multi-media, all-female art exhibition and celebratory event. Venus Envy St. Louis artists will be selected by a jury of three qualified women, and the event will occur on March 29th, 2003. Artists will be notified of their acceptance to the St. Louis exhibition by March 1st. Diversity of artists and creative experiences is a primary objective of Venus Envy 2003. All female artists working in any media and living within a 350-mile radius of St. Louis are encouraged to submit, and everyone is invited to attend and participate in the production of Venus Envy 2003.

Venus Envy 2003 will also premier in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and celebrate its 2nd year in Memphis, Tennessee on March 29th. Baton Rouge and Memphis artists will be selected and invited by female leaders in their respective communities.

Call 314-865-0181, leave your name and mailing address or download the printable submission form from the Venus Envy website www.venusenvy.org. For an update of area locations where submission forms can be found, visit the website or call 314-865-0181. Deadline for submissions: MUST be postmarked by February 4, 2003. Application Fee: $15.

Important Dates:
Submission deadline for artists: February 4, 2003
Notification letters mailed to artists: March 1, 2003
Deadline for delivery of artwork: March 16, 2003
Venus Envy 2003: March 29, 2003

Jurying Process
Venus Envy 2003 artists will be selected by a jury of three women. The jurors have no affiliation with the organizing of Venus Envy 2003 and are not participating artists. The jurors are chosen for their professional qualifications. Prospective artists will be anonymous to the jurors. The jurors will select approximately 50 artists on the following criteria:
- Overall artistic merit
- Feasibility of project
- Conceptual and aesthetic diversity
- Relevance to Venus Envy mission statement

Submission Procedure
Artists wishing to submit work for the upcoming Venus Envy 2003 must submit the following:

Application – Please fill out the Application on this form. Please remember that in order to ensure an anonymous jurying process the Application is the only place your name should appear.

Support Materials – Support materials should consist of three recent slides or photographs labeled only with a number. An accompanying slide sheet should detail the title, date, media and dimensions of the work pictured. Please do not submit original artwork. Support materials will be returned to artists not selected for Venus Envy 2003 if there is a SASE enclosed in the application. Venus Envy will retain the Application, Support Materials and Proposal of the selected participating Artists for curation and PR purposes. The information listed on the slide sheet will be printed in the Exhibition Catalog.

Proposal – Please include a one-page description of the work you intend to show at Venus Envy 2003. The Proposal should include: working information (title, media, dimensions) of the artwork, a statement detailing the concept of the artwork, and a description or sketch of the visual aspects of the finished artwork. All media will be considered for inclusion. Artists working in 2D will have approximately 12 to 15 lineal feet on which to exhibit as many pieces as they deem appropriate. Artists working in 3D media will have about 300 sq/ft of floor space. Size is limited by our freight elevator which is 8 x 8 x 7’. Venus Envy understands that this is a working description and is subject to moderate alteration. We do, however, request as complete a description as possible. Any accepted artwork that differs significantly from the original Proposal will not be shown.

Brief resume or bio – To be used for PR and curation purposes only. The jurors will not see this information.

Fees – Each Application must be accompanied by a $15 processing fee. All sales of artwork will be handled by the artist, and Venus Envy does not expect any commission on the sale of artwork. Since Venus Envy is produced almost entirely by volunteers, individual tax-deductible contributions are gratefully acknowledged.

Shipping/Handling/Delivery
Shipping, handling and delivery of artwork to and from Venus Envy 2003 by the participating artists is the artist’s responsibility. Artwork must be delivered by March 16. Selected artists may be responsible for assisting with lighting and installation of work. Venus Envy does not provide insurance for lost or damaged artwork. Venus Envy encourages all artists to invest in insurance for their artwork.

Mission Statement
Venus Envy is a multi-media, all-female art exhibition and celebratory event.

Venus Envy is produced entirely by the Venus Envy Planning Committee, which is comprised of: the Founding Artists, the Participating Artists, and Female Leaders in the Community.

Venus Envy recognizes women and the positive contributions they make to the cultural climate of her community.

Venus Envy utilizes the arts as a forum for women to express themselves freely, publicly, and creatively.

Venus Envy promotes the arts as a catalyst for bringing the whole community together.
