...a fallen superstar so badly in need of a vote of confidence that He requires mortal affirmation to sustain His fragile sense of omnipotence, then perhaps it is high time that He simply surrendur all responsibility due to mortals for the results of their own decisions and behaviors, individually and collectively. It would be a great burden removed from His weary celestial shoulders. And we should all be the more mature for it.

I don't need God to remind me to have a conscience, nor to be a civil and decent human being. And I certainly don't need government endorsing the sorts of behaviors that it finds to be most ideally expressive of my blind fidelity. My government is a collective creation of my society, and the power flows from individuals like you and me and everyone here upward toward the top, just like ebbs and currents of money. Divergences of opinion are the lifeblood of this government. Protest is its conscience. Winning and losing are just minor side effects to the entire political experience.

How does this work, exactly? Will Bill Gates email the results directly to God, so that His Hand can streak down out of the heavens to save us from ourselves? Sorry, I passed the fairy tale stage about the same time as I passed that point in my own aging where it no longer makes sense to equivocate in the name of tact. How this issue could possibly be equal in importance to that other co-called "equally important" topic, namely, an unjust war in Iraq that will doubtless kill tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of humans, is incomprehensible to me.

Hey, here's an idea! Perhaps it's this topic that's really intended to cause me to turn my back on that other topic, namely, an unjust war in Iraq that will doubtless kill tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of humans! D'yuh think?

Good thing my back wasn't turned. Ever vigilant. Steadfast.
