I would like suggestions on how to get more time into art and less time into the marketing side.
I would also like suggestions on how/when/where are there any inexpensive good fine art shows?
When I started doing art fairs in the early seventies, the space was free. We artists put it on ourselves. No one called us vendors. No one pushed us around, was irritable, or cruel. We were not competing with each other, but co-operative and friendly with each other. No one thought we needed a "promoter" for a good show, or a good turn-out. We didn't need canopies, and the setting was a park with no problems from the town. No one demanded we carry insurance, and no one stole from us. We were not in a location by a street, smelling fumes all day, or on pavement in the hot summer sun, or put in the end of a dark hall with an expensive booth and no crowd/no advertising. We enjoyed the weather, each other, and there were sales of art. A profit was guaranteed as the space was free.
So what happened? Who first thought to call artists "vendors" and when did we lose sight of the beauty of freedom?
I would like input from other artists on this. I would like to know if any artist group has overcome the 21st century price on everything, and quick fix mentality.
