OPEN CALL FOR INDEPENDENT CURATORS
Deadline: September 5th, 2003

Frère Independent is now accepting proposals from curators to exhibit their projects at a new independent art fair to be held the weekend of November 14-18th 2003. Frère Independent has been created for the sole purpose of offering independent artists and artists without gallery representation, an opportunity to exhibit and sell their work. Frère Independent’s mission is to offer these artists new avenues of dissemination by providing a weekend long event in New York that will showcase the work of 40-60 promising emerging artists in the contemporary art field.

This groundbreaking event will act as a meeting ground and market place for young artists, independent curators, burgeoning dealers, artists’ collaboratives, alternative gallery spaces, collectors and the public. The fair will be held at a location to be announced in New York City. Exhibitors at the fair will consist of the independent curators that Frère chooses to present, as well as young dealers, alternative galleries, artists’ collaboratives, and non-profit art spaces. For those curators who are accepted, participation in the fair is free. Frère will be responsible for all advertising and promotion and we will be publishing a high quality catalogue in conjunction with this event.

Curators will be chosen on the quality of their proposal, experience and the pertinence of their vision. Curators must write critical texts on the artists that they chose to promote and be available to present their project to the public throughout the duration of the fair. We are looking for strong and innovative proposals that are ambitious either politically, formally or conceptually. We are also looking for projects with an international scope.

The curators chosen by our panel will be responsible for:
- Presenting up to 5 artists at the fair
- Writing a general text on their curatorial vision and on the artists presented
- Writing a text on each specific artist whose work is presented
- Providing 3 to 5 printable quality photos of the work of each artist (preferably on CD)
- Securing the participation of the artists at the fair
- Facilitating transportation of artworks to the fair
- Installing the artworks at the fair
- Facilitating communication between the artists, the public and the organization

If you are interested in submitting a proposal please
SEND:
- A one-page abstract describing the proposed exhibition and a description of the proposed artists that you will present
- Your curriculum vitae – including ALL current contact information
- Each proposed artist’s curriculum vitae
- 3 to 5 printable quality photos of the work of each proposed artist (preferably on CD)
