IMPORTANT UPDATE: This gallery never opened. The owner changed his mind, and it doesn't exist. Sorry to disappoint.

I am the Executive Director of a new gallery in Santa Monica, California, and I am looking for artists to show in the gallery. The mission of the gallery is to show and sell fine arts and contemporary crafts made by local Southern California artists. We plan to open on October 1st, and we are counting on holiday sales to give us an initial boost.

The cost of doing business in the Los Angeles area is enormous, and at least initially, we will be charging artists a fee to be in the gallery. We will do eight six-week group shows a year. The fee to show for six weeks is $300, and we take a 35% commission on sales. The target price range of the work we will be showing is $50 - $3,000.

We have a good-sized space with a huge parking lot in back. We will provide a reception for every show, advertising, announcements, credit card sales, and sales staff. We have a mailing list of 7,000 to draw on, and we are looking for ideas for events we can host in the gallery to bring in more people.

I think we can fit quite a lot of work in the space, and I'm guessing that each artist will be able to show 6-12 pieces, depending on size and medium. Maybe more if your work is small, like jewelry.

We don't yet have a catchy name for the gallery, and we are open to your suggestions.

To be considered for the gallery, submit ten slides or photographs of your work, resume, artist's statement, biography, price list, and a SASE for the return of materials to Gallery, c/o Sewing Arts Center, 3306 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90405. Website URL is acceptable if your website has good pictures and the requested information.

Please direct questions and comments to me at cassie@cassietondro.com, and feel free to pass this message on to other artists.

Best regards,
Cassie Tondro
