Although you can find a number of wonderful and affordable works by Michel Suret-Canale on eBay one thing that will be lacking from now on are his most explicit erotic works - both heterosexual and homoerotic. Unfortunately eBay chose to cancel two recent auctions, even though the "questionable" portions of the pictures were blocked.
Michel Suret-Canale has strong feelings about pornography and creates his most explicit works in the spirit of love. For instance the artist, who is NOT gay, once expressed the following:
"...I think there is a real subversion in making art with explicit sex and love as an opposite work against war and pornography which twice steal lives, both for money."
In fact, on several of his erotic watercolors Suret-Canale has written in his own handwriting: "If the war is clean, then call me dirty."
The point being, of course, the irony of the fact that the depiction of sexual love is considered unacceptible while war is considered honorable. Suret-Canale views humanity with genuine feeling, portraying sexuality as a means of expressing tenderness, regardless of whether hetero or homosexual. Those who are offended can choose not to look, but for those of us who do this art will often evoke positive emotions.
The question of censorship is a political one, but to fight eBay would be a waste of time and effort if my objective is to introduce Suret-Canale to art lovers. In the near future I will create a separate Website specifically for the erotic arts of Suret-Canale. This should be ready by the end of 2003.
