my mother recently aquired a framed etching by the artist Robert Houston. We think the etching is of 'St Monan's' as this is what was written on the back of it.
We took it to a local auctioneer, who told us that Robert Houston was a "famous artist" and we have since learned that he was born in the 1800's, in Scotland.
On the back of the etching are the words "plate to be destroyed", which leads us to the possibility that this was a one-off etching.
Apparantly ther value would be anything from £50 upwards - the auctioneer told us that if the plate was indeed destroyed, and there weren't many prints made, then the sky's the limit in terms of value.
Obviously we now need to determine whether the plate was destroyed, and also whether the etching is the original drawing that the print was taken from, or something else.
If anyone can help with this, or tell us where/how to start looking for this information - or can provide us with any background information on Robert Houston, I would be eternally grateful.
Thank You.
