I would not venture down that path! if you are useing photo's and such for refrance eg: light and shadow /whatever... for more as a tool than to use the picture it self.that i would see no problem with. Most people holding the rights to the work in the magazine, would consider it ilegal or just another oportunity to make money. I would make your own tools for refrence take photo's of things that you would like to use in your work, unlike companies from when other artists used things directly from magazine ads and or products they protect things like that to the extream now,
I would stay away. so be aware of that
