Press Release – 3/17/04

Compact Version:

"In the Oral Tradition: An Evening of Performance Poetry." Jim Keller and Wally Glickman; Nyack Center, Wed. April 14 at 7:30 pm. Corner of South Broadway and Depew St.; Nyack, NY; Rockland County (Exit 11 New York State Thruway).

Long Version:

"In the Oral Tradition: An Evening of Performance Poetry" featuring Rockland Poets Jim Keller and Wally Glickman will be offered at the Nyack Center, as part of the Rockland Poetry Jam Series.

The "Oral Tradition" is as old the first group of people listening to others speak. Today's Performance Poetry is distinguished from other poetry primarily by the fact that it is composed with an eye towards being performed live more than being written for the printed page.

Performance poets, therefore tend to give equal weight to both the rendition and content of their work, so it is not just a "reading," and more often than not, noticeably spirited.

As for the featured poets, Wally Glickman notes....... ..."I got into performance poetry in the last few years, thanks to ‘Poetry Rising,’ the forerunner of ‘Poetry Jam.’ I teach physics for a living, and, I'm keeping my day job."

Jim Keller provides the following.... ..."Recently finished my career as a generally civil servant to my adopted Empire State. Currently, my main occupation, avocation and preoccupation are, respectively, Artist, Gadfly and Layabout. I am pursuing all with equal fervor."

The Nyack Center is a converted church building on the Corner of South Broadway and Depew St. in Nyack, NY in Rockland County (Exit 11 New York State Thruway). After the performance there will be an open mic session for any poets wishing to read.
