Frolov, Yuri Leonidovich. (11/03/1925-07/12/1998)



Frolov, Y.L. was born on November 3rd in Vedenovka, Ryazan region, Russia in 1925. Before the WWII entered at the Moscow Intermediate Art school 1939-44 and then at the Surikov Art Institute* until 1950. Active and worked in Moscow. Began exhibiting 1950. Starting 1951 permanent member of the All-Union Art exhibitions, Republicans, and Zonal Art Exhibitions. Frolov, Y.L. also a member of the MOSKha and Artists’ Union, USSR* since 1993 member of International Art Group. In 1954 group consists of 4 people including Frolov made their first art travel to Chukotka and in the Valley of Geysers (Kamchatka), where they created a serious of well-known paintings on northern thematic. Since that time the theme of Northern Nature became one of the important subjects in life of Frolov, Y.L. In between of 1954-1977 Frolov had been traveling back and forth up North more than 10 times. The result of that is creation of important artworks reflection of difficult life and labor of the people from North. The most important artwork (right now decorates the wall of Tretyakov gallery/museum) is Children of Chukotka, which before was exhibited throughout Former Soviet Union. The mastery of the artist was often highlighted through the famous and important soviet publications such as Flame, Children of North, Moscow Truth, Red Flag, Moscow Artist, and other publications. Frolov’s artworks were honored with government’s awards and diplomas. Important shows include “All-Union art Exhibitions”, Moscow, 1950; All-Union Art Exhibition, Moscow, 1951; All-Union Art Exhibition*, Moscow, 1955. Specialized in everyday-life genre paintings, scenes of life in Chukotka and on the sea, compositional portraits. Brother of S.L. Awarded many prizes for his input in developing of Russian and Soviet Art.

Frolov, Y.L. works are located in collection of many museums of Russia such as East-Kazakhstan Museum of Art, Kokchtavskoi Art Museum, Tikhinicheskoi Art Museum, Voronovskoi Art Museum, Shuiskom Art Museum. Also in State Art Museum of Russian Federation-Art Treasures and Belongings of Russia, Ministry of Art and Culture of Russian Federation, Tretyakov Museum, State Russian Museum.

Frolov works also can be founded in private collections in Italy, Caracas, Germany, and United States.

Frolov, Y.L. is listed and illustrated (plate 73) in the Dictionary of Twentieth Century Russian and Soviet Painters 1900-1980 by the Britain Scholar Matthew Cullerne Bown.


Surikov Art Institute
Moscow State Art Institute (MGKhI) named after the painter V.I.Surikov. Formed in 1948. Subordinate to the Academy of Arts of the USSR. One of two main art institutes in the country: (the other one is Repin Art Institute in Leningrad).

Artists’ union, USSR
Formed in 1957 (although envisage twenty-five years earlier, in the Central Committee decree dissolving independent artists’ groups (April 1932)). The artists’ unions of al the Soviet republics were affiliated to this body, which became a force for stylistic variety in socialist realism

All-Union Art Exhibitions
The biggest regular national exhibition of soviet artists. Beginning from 1946 each two years, the great exhibition took place (mostly in Moscow, but sometimes in Leningrad). It was a final competition of artists that ended zonal and regional exhibitions all over the country. It was quite important for the artists to win the right to exhibit their works at the show because State museums and other Public Institutes used to buy paintings from there.
