Hi,
I spent quite a bit of time studying Van Gogh's work when I was in college (1982-1985). During that time there were two major exhibits at the Met (I think) "Van Gogh in Arles" and "Van Gogh at St. Remy." These two show collected much of the work he did in these places. Some of the work hadn't been together since it was sold by Theo's wife.
They collected some of the work that Gauguin did during his months in Arles. You could see the way each ones style affected the other, and how they each handled the same subject matter. These two shows left a deep impression on me.
I'm not certain that I completely buy into the whole tortured, starving madman artist mistique surrounding him. Although some of it is true. What I admire is his commitment to his work, his coloration and brushwork.
It's nice to meet you too!
