Open call to artists:
The SAC Gallery at Stony Brook University on Long Island, NY, invites submissions from artists in all media of artworks concerning the topic of MARRIAGE. The show will run from November 4-December 9, 2004. Deadline for submissions is October 1, 2004.
The organizers of this exhibition are seeking works that explore in some way one or more of the multifaceted issues which relate to the topic of marriage. Within the current context of American legal battles over the definition of marriage and the civil rights of same sex couples, the institution of marriage has been framed as a site of great political and social import. These struggles over the definition of marriage perhaps have the transformative potential to challenge and redefine our concepts of “love” and “family”. This exhibition welcomes artworks that deal with contemporary as well as historical instantiations of marriage (and anti-marriage) debates, and it also encourages artworks that consider the performative and fantastic aspects of the act of marriage itself.
