“Art Belongs to Everyone”, a program of Art For Change at Carlito’s Café y Galeria in East Harlem, is accepting submissions for its January 2005 group show based on the theme: ‘family’. We are looking to curate a diverse exhibit of how ‘family’ has come to be perceived, defined, structured - and how it can represent tradition & resiliency, and yet it can also represent dysfunction & repression. This exhibit is tentatively scheduled to open January 3rd, and will run through February 6th. Open to emerging and established local artists employing all media except large three-dimensional work. Please submit: your name, contact information, no more than 3 samples of completed work (in hard copy print, slides or photographs), resume, artist’s statement, and a one-page statement detailing how you use art as a tool for social activism or change. Deadline for submissions is December 17, 2004. Send to: Art Belongs to Everyone: January Show, Art For Change at Carlito’s Café y Galeria, 1701 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10029.

“Art Belongs to Everyone” is a program that strives to make art accessible to people unaccustomed to experiencing the arts in gallery settings. The priorities of the program are: to tear down the unintentional elitism that exists in galleries; to equalize accessibility to various media; to stimulate community participation in creating and showing art; and to engage audiences in awareness, reflection and discussion of/on issues affecting our communities.
