Subject: Hi, David E., Good To See You Here
Recently, I made my most important sale ever. Not Picasso huge, but (for me) significant. Afterwards, I sent the owner a friendly card for Christamas which had one of my early, early spontaneous dancer figures on it. I ended up at a sitdown dinner with her, and (low and behold) she asked me about the possibility of her getting that drawing too. The original was stuck in a drawer for five years. I gave it to her (flat out, no charge, left it on her doorstep the next day with a note "it's yours" and a smiley face), just to get it into the world, and to acknowledge her sincere attraction to it through NO effort to sell it on my behalf. The exposure of it in the right place at the right time brought her wanting of it to me. Five years ago, when I made THAT figure painting, I never would have just given it away. Times change. Attitudes change. Wisdom grows. The sweet spot between creativity and commercialism is arrived at, I have to believe.
The most profound statement I have read in an art marketing text is this:
"Know what art is for YOU."
You seem to know NOW what it is for you. I'm still sort of in your boat too. But I feel myself moving more towards that sweet spot, where selling my work is not selling my soul.
