I have a oil painting by James Swinnerton that I beleve to be original, however I am not 100% positive. Maybe some one can help? The painting is on canvas however it is bound to hardboard which appears to be masonite. The canvas is glued in some manner directly to the hardboard with no edges of the canvase overlaping over the edges of the hardboard. Brush strokes are visible and the painting is signed. Under a 20X magnifying glass I cannot detect any dots or color under the paint. The thing that concerns me is that the canvas is bound to hardboard and not streched on a standard strecher. I assume it could have been mounted that way by a previous owner to prevent damage?
Any ideas or feedback?
