Hanno Schrader and Mildred J. Roth Schrader were my grandparent's best friends. I visited in summer with them. My family has approximately fifteen of their paintings. We didn't know what became of Hanno after Mildred died. They were the most delightful people I have ever known. I
have their picture on my dresser.
Mildred studied at La Sorbonne. Grant Woods wanted to buy her painting
of Coney Island but Mildred refused. Uncle Hanno's favorite painting was his "Mars Landscape". I am not sure if that was the actual title. His loved taking me to it, poking a pin through a piece of paper and showing me that no matter where you looked there was a complete painting.
Attending gallery openings was the highlight of my summer. Uncle Hanno made all of his own bread and prepared the finger sandwiches. They always served 'Constant Comment' iced tea as part of the punch. I met amazing people there in Bearsville.
I still have a newspaper clipping regarding a showing of Uncle Hanno's work at the Newark Library.
I wondered what happened to all of their wonderful paintings.
Their artwork inspired me to study art history at Rutgers and their love
for each other continues to inspire me in my marriage today.
Look forward to hearing from you.
