Hello, all! I’m interested in starting a dialogue regarding artist representation – specifically, one that will reveal various experiences, both good and bad, with artist representation. Further, I’m not only interested in hearing from artists, but also representatives/dealers, be they associated with a gallery or independent representatives/dealers. I well know that there’s no one-size-fits-all model for the artist-representative relationship, as each situation can vary greatly from the next; each party has their own personality…professional and personal wants, needs, desires, aspirations, etc. The specifics of these relationships are also affected by the particular market in which the parties are targeting. However, in an effort to develop that “perfect” model of the artist-representative relationship, I’d love to take into account the experiences of others. Please feel free to be relatively vague or extremely specific in your responses.

Considerations:

Were/Are you contractually bound to the other party? To what extent?
How extensive was/is the market coverage for this relationship?
What was/is your agreed-upon commission structure? Was/Is it suitable?
Who was/is responsible for marketing expenses, shipping, supplies, etc.?
What did/do you feel/know was your obligation to the other party in this relationship?
Did/Do you consider the other party a friend in this relationship? Did/Do they treat you like one? Did/Do you feel that they’re always working in your best interest?
Was/Is your level of contact with the other party adequate?
Overall, what worked/works, didn’t/doesn’t work in this relationship? Were/Are there often bones of contention? If so, what was/is the situation?…….etc, etc, etc….

Thank you, in advance, for taking the time to consider this topic. I feel that it’s extremely important, especially considering how many people can/will be affected by these artist-representative relationships, besides those directly involved. Your openness will definitely be helpful to me, as well as others on this site. Again, I appreciate your candor and look forward to your responses!

Best,
Chad
