This piece was created from a photograph on the web of a bust of Saddam with a disguarded army boot on his head. As a result of my use of this external source, the piece is not for sale.
It is one of a series of mixed media art work prints created as a personal response to the violent events of the Iraq War and its bloody postscript. This series is not intended as a partisan political statement, but rather as a purely humanitarian and reflective one. The images represent views from behind dirt, bomb and blood splattered glass, and through the strange beauty this creates commemorate those who have died, or suffered loss, in this messy conflict. We are also reduced to viewing such conflicts through the 'window' of the media, and this is another aspect of these works.
I am a 'New Media' Artist and Photographer living and working in Bath. Starting as a conventional media artist (waterclours, acrylics, pen and ink etc) in recent years I have moved completely into the field of digital and new media fine arts. My works are created from under paintings drawn in a variety of sources - ranging from traditional mediums (watercolours, acrylics, inks etc) - to photographs, and original digital images, all of which are recomposed and/or finished digitally. I am convinced that the web is the key to the democratic future of the visual arts. I get much positive critical feedback from buyers of my art, and visitors to my on-line art sites, which together receive millions of hits each year. I also use the virtual environment to share critiques and associate with an international group of fellow artists, collectors and art lovers. The subjects and styles I employ in my art and photography range ascoss the entire face of modernism and incorporate elements of conceptual art.I am a member of the 'For Now' group of artists in Bath. War is never clean in any sense and from the outset it has been my intention to suggest the dirt and disease that accompanies war at every level, and also the dust of such desert environments, which mixes with the smoke of battle, and this also suggests the smokescreen of propaganda on all sides in... |

I have found it increasingly impossible to watch the events in Iraq without responing both as an artist and a human being, and this series is the result. I was unsure as to whether to use web sources as the basis for the works, but decided that the most powerful images emerging from those on the gro... |
