Jose Julio sold his first painting in 1978 in his native city of Santiago de Cuba at 15 years of age. In his neighborhood of Contramaestre he became a kind of celebrity as the much sought local painter for parties and civic events. He moved to the United States in 1991 and has been painting since, moving from en early geometric style through frankly surrealistic creations to his current phase in which abstraction gives way to individual concrete experience.
