Pablo Picasso's tragic and poignant "Old Guitarist" was created during his Blue Period (1901 - 1904), after a close friend's suicide plunged him into a deep depression. Only 20 years of age at the time, his already vast emotional range profoundly spoke through the painting's somber tones and expressive contours. An artistic genius, Picasso (1881-1973) is one of the creators of Cubism, and he dominated the development of the visual arts during the first half of the twentieth century. Picasso's body of work is so extensive that it included an estimated 20,000 paintings, prints, drawings, and sculptures.

Pablo Diego Jos Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno Mara de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santsima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso known as Pablo Ruiz Picasso (25 October 1881 8 April 1973) was a Spanish painter, draughtsman, and sculptor. He is best known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles embodied in his work. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) and Guernica (1937), his portrayal of the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.Picasso demonstrated uncanny artistic talent in his early years, painting in a realistic manner through his childhood and adolescence; during the first decade of the twentieth century his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas. His revolutionary artistic accomplishments brought him universal renown and immense fortune throughout his life, making him one of the best-known figures in twentieth century art.
