A graduate from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, Jennifer Kleinsteuber has ambitious goals of establishing herself as a successful artist within a five year time frame.Kleinsteuber is becoming well known for her portraits in which she uses a photo-transfer technique and bright, solid colours. Her portraits are compellingly seductive. These subjects pose for themselves and for the viewer with a confrontational gaze that is just as powerful as the works themselves. They appear to be completely aware of our voyeuristic presence. The subjects unabashed look has transformed the gaze into a mirror that reflects this presence, our fantasies, our prejudices of beauty and sexuality back unto us: we are caught looking at the subject."I want the people I paint, to be able to explore their own fantasies without restricting their position. There is no shame in being sexy. The careful and self conscious viewer has become so hyper-aware of the enjoyment of "looking" and "seeing", that it has been lost or replaced by analysis. I'd like to be able to harness this wandering eye and dare people to examine their biases, encourage them to think about the image's construction and ultimately promote the enjoyment of voyeuristic fantasy play.Looking is still complicated, but it can be pleasurable.Visualize this work being shown in a singular space and imagine people entering a room where they are surrounded by penetrating stares, self-assured seductresses, and post-punk nymphs. The shear multitude of portraits intensifies this transaction of looking, while ultimately challenging the imaging of fantasy and representation. They embrace their subjectivity and their potential fetishization; empowered by their right to present their vulnerability, their independence and their sexuality.JENNIFER KLEINSTEUBERCVJkleinsteuber@shaw.cawww.jenniferkleinsteuber.comEDUCATION2003 Bachelor of Fine Arts, Emily Carr Institute1994 Bachelor of Arts (Psychology), Simon Fraser UniversityCURATED EXHIBITIONS2003 June - Sept Barrister's Lounge, Vancouver Law Courts2000 October Landscapes: A Space Revisited, Gastown Vancouver2000 February Space Above Sonar, Gastown Vancouver, BCSOLO EXHIBITIONS2004 December - Kleinsteuber Gallery, Vancouver BC2004 December - Blake's on Carrall, Vancouver, BC2004 November - Strutter's Hair Design, Vancouver, BC2004 October - Salon, Atlanta, GA2004 June - The Velvet Cafe, Vancouver, BC2003 April - May Blake's, Vancouver, BC2002 April - June New and Old Works, New Westminster, BC2001 June A Salon Show, False Creek, BC2000 Aug - Sept collection of paintings, Elwoods, Vancouver2000 September An Illusion of Knowledge, Vancouver, BC1999 October Running, Lugz Liquid Lounge, Vancouver1999 July Not a Self Portrait, dv8, Vancouver, BCGROUP EXHIBITIONS2004 Sept - Studio 88, West Pender St, Vancouver, BC2004 Sept - Ayden Gallery, 88 W.
