"Chapterhouse" is in the private collection of Rev. Shawn Moniger and David Friedman of CT.
This painting is made of coffee, acrylic paint, spraypaint, sand, stencil, and paper collage.
I started this painting like most all of my others with coffee and acrylic paint. I began working with the shapes and couldn't find anywhere to go with this piece for quite a while. In fact this painting was very difficult to complete. I took 2 whole months to just stare at the shapes and decide where to go. Many times I do this (stare at the painting for a long time) but never 2 whole months without touching the work-just staring-meditating. I finally saw in my mind the suggestion of a cathedral and that brought up a lot of emotional energy...deep secrets of religious sects. Finally 6 months later I was done with the painting and happy. Many months after I was finished, I finally saw the reference to the DUNE novels by Frank Herbert (not surprising since I read all of them and they impacted me greatly). This painting was about the planet of the Bene Gesserits: Chapterhouse. The mystery, secrets, and invincible skills of these fictional women are awe-inspiring.
There are many layers of paint and collage. I suggest viewing the painting up close in detail to see the mixture of sand and paint, collage, and layers of paint on paint.
