The painting is made of oil-based house paint and acrylic paint, coffee, sharpie marker. The original canvas I found on the street in the East Village, Manhattan. I painted over a painting of an eye floating out in the universe. I incorporated parts of the original painting and obliterated other parts with my mixture of paints and coffee.
The title is a reference to the 50's sci-fi classic "The Brain That Would Not Die". The brilliant but misguided young doctor has a car wreck with his beautiful fiance' in the car. He is not harmed but she is decapitated. Being the brilliant but horrible twisted sicko that he is, he keeps her head and brain alive and functioning in a pan in the lab. The bodiless head is attached to a never ending series of tubes. She develops psychic powers and begins to communicate with a Frankenstein monster-like being in the closet in the room. Together they exact their revenge on the doctor. Its an awesome, seedy, B&W gem of a movie.
This painting reminded me of the movie..so i call it Jan In A Pan...which is a fan reference to the movie. I found the phrase on some sci-fi movie fan website.
