I have to think a gate copeing a lake: a gate of/to the future above the frozen lake of the past.

The eye "gate" can also mean: the future is looking for, or waiting for something; it asks for something, and we can see it(s question) on the frozen image=the past.

Many thanks, a most interesting and instructive interpretation Katalin!
The eye can just as easily serve as a metaphorical gate to pass to the future, as it can as a window on the past/future! I like the idea of the lower reflected eye being a frozen image too! david: )
