Artist: Rocio Heredia

Rocío Heredia is a self-taught artist of the Mexican Contemporary generation. Rocío uses the traditional sculpting techniques of Chasing and Repoussé to create fully detailed Icon covers, Judaica and Figurative Art designs on fine silver, copper, gold, brass and tin. The work of Rocío Heredia reflects the artistic tradition that has been evolving in Mexico, from the native Aztec and Teotihuacan ancient societies to the complexities of the Spanish conquest, up to our recent times. Rocío began her foray into the art metal world creating ornamental panels with a religious subject, either Catholic and Judaic. She holds a degree in Psychology and worked as a clinician before establishing a Day Care Center, which she operated for 6 years. Her artistic and creative mentor, Master Painter/Sculptor Efrén Ordóñez, provided support and inspiration and has collaborated with Rocío for the creation of panels featuring painted human figures. Her work was exhibited in a one-woman show "Divine Inspiration" at the Loyola Cultural Center of Monterrey in May, 2001. Since then, Rocío has been the recipient of many recognition and awards for skillful and passionately realized themes. She was the first recipient of the Valentin Yotkov Studio Scholarship (New York) in 2001. She was invited to hold a Repoussé and Hand-Embossed Metals Workshop at the Stockton Jewelry Arts School, Stockton, CA (2001). Rocío was Guest Artist of the Month at BTDesign Art Gallery in December 2001, scoring second place in Best Artworks and Best Artsite and third in the Master of 2001 Annual Art Award. Rocío still collaborates with BTDesign Art Gallery interviewing guest artists and has been evaluating Sculptors for the Master Annual Art Award since 2002. Rocío studied with Master Valentin Yotkov and Master Dolores Valenza, in New York. In the Fall of 2003 Rocío was the recipient of the First Artist in Residence Award through the Metalwerx Education Scholarship Inc [MESI]. During her Residence she held a Repoussé Workshop and taught private classes at the Metalwerx Jewelry/Metalarts School. In October 2003 Rocío was the Visiting Artist at the Bowling Green State University in Bowling Ohio, where she held a Repoussé workshop (Co-sponsors include: Student Metals Art Council - SMAC and the Medici Circle of the School of Art). She taught Repoussé at Dolores Valenza Studio in New York in December 2003. Rocío was awarded the 2004 Dorothy MacKenzie Annual Purchase Award from the Bowling Green State University Foundation, Inc. for her repoussé work "King David". The purpose of the award is to annually purchase a piece of outstanding work in jewelry and metalsmithing from someone who has been affiliated with the BGSU. The works purchased become part of their permanent collection. Her "Saint George and the Dragon" was published on the cover of the book "Dragon Slayer" by Christopher Cookson in July 2004. Recently, Rocío received a Scholarship invitation through the Fred de Vos Studio to study Jewelry Design in Wax in a workshop at Il Chiostro, Venice (Italy). Rocio Heredia's works are in private collections in Mexico, the USA, Switzerland, Israel, Spain and Italy. Rocío teaches private classes and workshops on her Chasing and Repousse technique in Mexico and abroad. Rocío currently divides her time among professional website creation, graphic design and metalwork. An accomplished website creator, Rocío has her own Webpage ROCIOHEREDIA.COM.
