Whenever I ask someone what they do for a living, if they say they are a Computer Programmer or, better yet, a Computer Programming & Maintenance Technician - it just shuts me up straight away - the subject is too vast to tackle. If they say, 'oh, great I've got a problem with my e-mail..' just tell them its not your speciality field, and then make up some technical sounding terms like "co-axal terminals" and "two-way V-nodes", whilst dribbling your wine, and they'll politely retreat.
