One of the more isolated nature preserves in the north east, Assatigue/Chincoteague Island is a barrier island shared by Maryland (Assatigue) and Virginia (Chincotigue). This island is home to a free roaming band of ponies that have learned to be more friendly than perhaps is good for them, due to frequent visitors laden with food. This is a case in point, where a newly wed couple made a visit and proceeded to feed the ponies doughnuts. The one pictured here stuck his head into their VW van, received a doughnut, sat down with head still inside the van, rear legs straightened and couldn't get up. The pony was actually being strangled under its' own weight. A long story short, he was finally released with a hoist brought in by park rangers and a detaching of the VW door. This is one of a series from these events presented as a feature in the magazine section of the Baltimore News American, 'The Ponys on Their Honymoon'. What a bazaar image!
