ROD McGEHEE
Born in Marshalltown, Iowa in 1953, Rod McGehee has lived mostly throughout the west, including Arizona, Colorado, Utah and Idaho. His education includes study at the Rhode Island School of Design and further study with Taos artist, Ray Vinella. McGehee focuses on the American southwest and also paints scenes in Europe and anywhere else his travels take him. He expresses his admiration for Matisse, Van Gogh, Hockney and Thomas Hart Benton. "I appreciate artists who are ahead of their time, the so-called risk takers, because most great works of art are the result of some kind of risk taking," says McGehee. Today he takes his own risks by creating in a looser, painterly fashion that suggests rather than copies. He uses color and composition to evoke his own feelings rather than producing a literal rendition of the scene before him. "After spending countless hours in philosophical discussion with fellow artist, gallery operators and patrons... after worrying about the development of a personal style... after trying to second guess the art market, I've arrived at a simple two word statement that really says it all, 'JUST PAINT,' because nothing really happens till the brush hits the canvas," says McGehee. His subject matter ranges from landscapes and seascapes to intimate interiors. Rod McGehee currently resides in the Hill Country of Texas.
