One of a series of works created from photographs taken in late December (2007) This is Pulteney Weir from the East bank of the river Avon just beneath the bridge with freezing fog mixing with the mists rising from the waters plunging over the weir and the winter solstice sun low in the sky behind.
The building behind is the massive Empire Hotel c1899-1901 (accurately described as an 'unbelievably pompus piece of architectiure' in the Pevsner Guide, with over 100 bedrooms when built). It certainly gives a flavour of the certainty and power of the late Victorian period. It was, appropriately, requisitioned by the admiralty in 1939 and the top floors were converted into luxury retirement apartments in 1995-6.[CLICK ON THE IMAGES FOR LARGER FORMAT VERSIONS]
