Tyne Bridges Summer Sunset, Original watercolour painting by Alan Reed

Newcastle's quayside has seen many changes since I first starting painting it back in the early 1890's.
From outside the Pitcher & Piano you get a wonderful interplay of curves, from the Millennium Bridge in the foreground to the distinctive skyline of the Sage then finally through to the famous arch of the Tyne Bridge itself.

The tall sunset clouds help to take one's eye back through the painting to create a lovely, fluid contrast to the form and structure of the bridges and Quayside architecture.

That same fluidity is maintained by some simple free yet carefully positioned brushmarks that indicate the movement of the River Tyne.
