Seller Comments...
Harlequin means for me a character stuck in a place that's not his own. It was at the time, sort of autobiographical, refering to my beginings in America having been blown far away to take root in Italy. I looked at all the foreigners trying to fit in; but even if an American like me wears Gucci, he still isn't going to look like an Italian, rather like a sort of ridiculous parody.
The sculpture sat for a year in the lobby of a hotel, and then it was bought, by an Italian. I do that, sometimes, because a show just isn't enough time to find a buyer for pieces like this.
It's marble inlay, with colored marbles from six countries used in the pattern of the costume. The lips of the smile are painted, over a carved frown.
