1907 - 1966

Henri Leopald Masson was born in Belgium in 1907. He immigrated to Canada in 1921 and settled in Ottawa. As a painter Masson was inspired by The Group of Seven. He was mainly self taught with additional studies at the Ottawa Art Association. He painted scenes in the Hull area in the Gatineau Valley; and on trips to Europe and the United States.

By 1945 he was exhibiting his works and was renowned as painter . In the 1960's and 70's, his works were exhibited at Robertson Galleries and Wallack Galleries in Ottawa. Today his paintings are included in the National Gallery of Canada Collection.
Leopold paints a snapshot of children playing in a school yard. He uses a pallet of rich and vibrant colors to express the excitement and spirit that a few moments of recess can create. The undefined figures, as well as his quick and rough brush strokes capture the quick movement and high energy of a child’s play.
