Seller Comments...
This jar is called Torpedo Jar, perhaps due to its large cylindrical shape.

Master Libano makes some of the most emblematic acid engraving artworks in these jars, which are entirely handmade without any previous molding. This jar has a wonderful cutting, which makes it a true work of art.

The acid engraved motif, done by this great artisan, is achieved by the manual application of a specific solution onto the motif to be engraved, leaving the surfaces that the acid is going to corrode undone.

The engraving of pictures and figures can only be made onto “double” crystal, this means, there are two layers of glass, being the inferior one colorless and the upper one blue.

The main engraved motif shows a scene that was of great meaning in the history of the Portuguese Discoveries’ Age: a group of sailors edifies a milestone on the shore they have newly discovered, carving their arrival and landing time and date, and then claim it in the name of the Portuguese Nation’s King. Milestones similar to this one can still be found on African and Brazilian shores.
