I painted the background in to appear slightly out of focus so that the wave and rocks would seem to be more real looking. I wanted to achieve a "soft focus" background because that's the effect you get when you take a picture with a camera. It tends to give a more realistic look. The wave itself has several components - the foaming turbulant white crashing water with the spray caught in the wind - the green kelp-tinted interior of the wave which blends into oxygen-rich and foamy sea water being sucked into the approaching wave. This painting has so much action in it you can almost "see" it moving when you stare at it. (or is it just me?)
