The inspiration for this painting came from a book I read 20 years ago. It was written by Rom Robbins and is was actually called 'Still Life with Woodpecker. The hibiscus seems to be observing the drama unfolding within its domain (pulling the worm from the fruit). This painting is not from the book cover. The book shows a woodpecker flying over the country side with some dynamite clutched in its claws and a kitchen match in its beak. The idea for this painting suddenly popped into my mind and I quickly sketched out the composition. That's a "pileated woodpecker" by the way. I added a doorway and a room. As you can see it has a hardwood floor. That is a bonzai orange tree on the table in the background and in the framed matted picture on the wall is "Apache Land"
