This is a painting of a mare and her colt. They are probably going to get a drink at the stream and the mare is instructing the colt to check the surroundings for any possible danger before distracting himself with the act of drinking. Hence, the name of the painting- "School Time". The horses are caught in a ray of sunlight and part of the background is in deep shadow.
