You can see the action of the lead indian and his horse. The indian in the rear is turning from his forward facing position on his horse to check the back trail for any possible pursuit. What signifies them as Apache is their head gear and garments. The pack mule has an army type pack rig. If it was an indian pack rig it would be in shabby bundles instead of neat military packaging
