Harry McCormick describes himself as just a fellow that “paints what he sees.” A self-taught artist, McCormick is most recognized for his paintings of famous taverns, restaurants and elegant public spaces, as well as more intimate living places. His work is recognized worldwide, and has been compared to Romantic Realist artists Wyeth and Hopper, as it creates a realism that is touching and private, yet accessible to the viewer. In recent years, McCormick has cultivated a connection to the growing public interest in the game of poker and its lifestyle; as a result, he has created a series of paintings that depict old-fashioned poker games being played by cigarette-smoking, whisky-drinking characters who are seated at tables set in ornate, antique rooms. McCormick has enjoyed international success through several individual and collective exhibitions of his work, and his permanent collections can be seen all over the country, in renowned institutions including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and St. Mary’s College of Maryland. His artwork is exhibited in the Vatican Collection in Rome, Italy, and is part of the private collections of Mel Brooks, Anne Bancroft and Senator Ted Kennedy.
