When John Barber puts oil paint to canvas, he works to portray the natural treasure of our land and the hardworking people who earn their livelihood here. A native of Danville, Virginia, Barber received his B.F.A. degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1969. Ten years later he decided to leave his successful career in commercial art and follow the calling of his boyhood. He focused on maritime art, predominately the sites and people of the Chesapeake Bay area where he has always lived. Travels broadened the scope of his work to include scenes across America and Europe.

John Barberís art is featured in John M. Barberís Chesapeake, a book published by the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. The artist has shared his success through donations of artwork and copyrights, amounting to more than half a million dollars, in support of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and other environmental organizations.
